The vision for RARE Pearls personifies the charge of the late Dr. Maya Angelou, “When you learn, teach; when you get, give.” The passion behind this vision had been stirring in my heart for years. Deeply disturbed by the evidence of a steady decline in the confidence, self-respect, values, and positive aspirations of young girls, I realized that “someone needed to do something.” After much prayer and consideration, I realized that this “someone” was me.
I recognize the value of positive role models and guides in the lives of young girls. My life is an example of the difference this makes. I never had a “formal” mentoring relationship while growing up; however, I was blessed to have people who encouraged, directed, and redirected me. My mother, grandmother, aunt, caring teachers, church members, and others invested immeasurably in who I have become.
I firmly believe that every girl deserves the same chance I had. Through RARE Pearls, I am committed to work with other dedicated women to equip and empower high school girls to navigate and overcome the challenges, hardships, negative media images, and other risk factors impacting their futures. By coming alongside them at a key stage in their lives, we will help to unlock their full potential and improve their long-term outcomes. We are going to do what we can to give them the tools and support they need to achieve their dreams. This will benefit not only them but their families and communities as well.
I realize this endeavor will be neither quick nor easy. The statistics related to our young girls are alarming, but they should not deter us but rather compel us to act. I am committed, and I hope that we can count on your support.
We can make a difference!
